Tambo International Airport is the main international gateway for Johannesburg and a common starting point for South African safari itineraries. A little planning around the first and last day makes the airport much easier to use, particularly when you are connecting to a hotel, private transfer or long road journey.

Where should you stay after arriving?
Sandton and Rosebank are two common Johannesburg bases, but the best hotel depends on what happens next. If you land late and leave early, airport-area accommodation may be more sensible. If you have time to explore Johannesburg, staying in the city gives you a better base for touring and dining.

Sometimes. Dinokeng and Madikwe can work well by road, while Kruger and Greater Kruger require more time and depend heavily on the exact lodge or gate. Arrival time matters. A late international landing followed by a long road transfer is not always the best start to a safari.
