Johannesburg tours and day trips

Johannesburg tours, properly experienced. Johannesburg is not a city that reveals itself from a hotel window. Spurwing’s Johannesburg experiences are built around context: the history, neighbourhoods, people and places that explain how one of Africa’s great cities became what it is today.

WHERE A DAY CAN GO

Johannesburg deserves more than a drive-through

For many travellers Johannesburg is treated as an airport between two destinations. We think that misses the point. The city is one of the most important chapters in understanding modern South Africa — and the right guide changes what you see. Pair Soweto with the Apartheid Museum, or look beyond the city to Pretoria, the Cradle of Humankind, Gold Reef City, the Lesedi cultural village or a full day at Sun City and the Pilanesberg.

PLANNING

Planning a Johannesburg day tour

How long do Johannesburg day tours take?

Published durations run from about five hours for the Johannesburg City Tour, Pretoria, the Lion & Safari Park and Lesedi to about eight hours for the full-day Johannesburg, Soweto & Apartheid Museum tour; the other Soweto tours take about four to six hours. Sun City and the Pilanesberg are full days of about 11 hours.

Where do the tours start?

Every experience on this page starts from Johannesburg, and the pickup arrangements are shown on each experience page. Tours that start at O.R. Tambo depend on flight times and run on a private basis only.

How are the prices worked out?

Published day-tour rates are per person in South African rand and depend on how many people travel together; the rates on this page are for two to four travellers. They are valid for departures from 19 October 2026 to 31 December 2027, and children under 12 pay 50% of the adult fare. Experiences marked price on request are quoted for your date.

Are there days a tour does not run?

Departure days and times are confirmed when you enquire. Some experiences have fixed closures: the Johannesburg, Soweto & the Apartheid Museum day, for example, does not run on Mondays because the museum is closed.

Can I see wildlife on a Johannesburg day?

Yes, without a flight. Dinokeng, roughly an hour from Johannesburg, offers Mongena game drives as a morning, afternoon, full-day or sunset safari, and the Lion & Safari Park is a half-day of about five hours. For a longer safari, compare our Kruger safaris.

The Spurwing difference

A premium experience is not created by adding luxury adjectives. It comes from planning the day properly, using the right people, making inclusions clear and leaving enough space to actually engage with the destination.

A more complete experience

Where an experience states that essential entrance fees are included, they form part of the price rather than becoming a string of surprises on the day.

Time to experience it properly

Published durations are practical guides. We plan realistic touring time and do not use the clock as an excuse to rush meaningful parts of the experience.

Personally handled

From the questions before arrival to the operation on the day, the booking remains connected to people who understand what has been planned.

PLAN YOUR DAY

Built around your day in Johannesburg

Airport arrival, hotel location, onward safari, family needs, interests and available time all affect the right plan. We shape the experience around the journey you are already taking rather than forcing every traveller into the same day.

Spurwing has operated South African travel since 1996. That experience sits behind the day: practical routing, realistic timing, guide coordination and the judgement to know when a plan needs to adapt.

  • Timed around your flights and hotel
  • Combined with a Soweto, Cradle or Pretoria day where it makes sense
  • Connected to the safari or Cape leg that follows

Your Johannesburg starting point

Not sure which experience fits? Start with what interests you. History and politics, Soweto, culture, family travel, a first visit to South Africa or simply making the most of a day between flights all lead to different recommendations.
