SOUTH AFRICA / PLANNING GUIDE
Where to Stay in Kruger National Park
Choosing where to stay in Kruger is primarily a geography decision. Price and room type matter, but the camp, gate or lodge location determines how much of your holiday is spent exploring sensibly versus driving simply to reach the next place.

PLAN WITH CONTEXT
Inside Kruger National Park
Staying inside the park puts you directly into the national-park rhythm and works particularly well for self-drive travellers. Accommodation ranges from simpler camp options upward, and the experience is about access to Kruger rather than conventional hotel luxury.
PLAN WITH CONTEXT
Outside a gate
Accommodation outside the park can offer more choice in style and price while keeping day access practical. The exact gate matters: a property described as ‘near Kruger’ is not automatically convenient for the area you intend to explore.
PLAN WITH CONTEXT
Greater Kruger private reserves
A private-reserve lodge is a different safari product, not merely a more luxurious version of a Kruger camp. Guided game drives, meals and lodge time usually form a larger part of the experience.
PLAN WITH CONTEXT
One base or several?
With only a few nights, one well-chosen base may be better than constant camp changes. On a longer self-drive trip, moving between sectors can reveal different landscapes and create a natural route through the park.
PLACES TO STAY
Choose the kind of stay, then the property
Once the geography is decided, each kind of stay has its own page.
- Staying inside Kruger National Park: concession lodges such as Hamiltons Tented Camp and Hoyo Hoyo Safari Lodge.
- Kruger accommodation: every Kruger-side stay we work with, including gate-town hotels such as Hippo Hollow Country Estate in Hazyview.
- Greater Kruger accommodation: lodges in the Timbavati, Klaserie, Sabi Sand and Thornybush private reserves.

How Spurwing selects accommodation
We want the property to fit the itinerary: who is travelling, how they are arriving, whether they are self-driving, desired comfort level, number of nights and what they want from the safari. That is more useful than sorting hundreds of properties by star rating.
