The stay
A Shangaan-built lodge on an old elephant path
Hoyo Hoyo means "welcome" in Tsonga, and the lodge is built accordingly: six circular suites with tall conical thatched roofs in the Shangaan vernacular, set along an ancient elephant path on the banks of the Mluwati River in the centre of Kruger National Park. Inside, each suite is air-conditioned, with a large stone bath, an outdoor shower, a private deck, a safe and tea and coffee facilities; there is an infinity pool and wellness treatments in camp. As with its sister lodges Imbali and Hamiltons, drives run twice a day on the private 10,000-hectare Mluwati Concession, where vehicles may leave the road. Three meals, selected drinks and both daily safaris are included, and guests must be 12 or older unless the lodge is taken exclusively.
Why Hoyo Hoyo
Hoyo Hoyo gives couples the same concession, guiding and inclusive format as the other Mluwati lodges in a more characterful, smaller-scale building, usually at a lower rate tier than Imbali's plunge-pool suites or Hamiltons' tents. Six suites means a whole-lodge booking is realistic for a group of friends, and is the only route in for families with children under 12.
