What to Pack for a South African Safari

Safari packing is easier when you focus on comfort, changing temperatures and practical luggage rather than buying an entirely new wardrobe. What you need will vary by season, destination, lodge and the rest of your South African itinerary.

Dress in layers

Early game drives can feel surprisingly cool, while daytime temperatures may be much warmer. Lightweight layers make it easier to adjust as conditions change. Comfortable neutral everyday clothing is generally more useful than specialised “safari” outfits.

Useful essentials

Comfortable closed shoes, sun protection, sunglasses and a hat are sensible basics. Binoculars can add considerably to wildlife viewing. Bring any personal medication you require and keep essential medication with you rather than relying on checked luggage.

Think about the vehicle and lodge

Soft-sided or compact luggage can be easier to manage when the itinerary involves smaller vehicles or multiple transfers. If domestic or light-aircraft flights form part of the trip, check the applicable baggage rules for those sectors before packing.
