Kruger National Park Gate Guide
Choosing the right Kruger entrance gate is a practical itinerary decision, not simply a navigation detail. Kruger National Park covers a vast area, and entering through the wrong gate can add unnecessary driving to an already long travel day.
Start with where you are staying
Your camp or accommodation should normally drive the gate decision. A gate that looks convenient from Johannesburg may not be the sensible choice for a camp much farther north or for accommodation outside a different section of the park.
Gate times matter
Kruger entrance gates operate within seasonal opening and closing times. These can change, so travellers should confirm the current SANParks gate times for their travel date and avoid building an itinerary around a late arrival with no margin for delays.
Allow for the journey before the gate
Road conditions, comfort stops, airport procedures and traffic can affect arrival time. If you are driving from Johannesburg or arriving on a flight, plan conservatively rather than treating an estimated driving time as a guaranteed arrival.
Private reserve access is different
Greater Kruger lodges and private reserves have their own access routes and procedures. Do not assume that a Kruger National Park gate is the correct arrival point for a lodge simply because the property is described as being in the broader Kruger region.
