The Drakensberg: mountain valleys in KwaZulu-Natal.

The Drakensberg is the mountain range on the western side of KwaZulu-Natal, and parts of it, including the Cathedral Peak valley, lie within a World Heritage landscape. It is a trip for mountain scenery, walking and fresh air rather than a safari. The nearest international airport is King Shaka International in Durban, and we plan Drakensberg stays as part of a tailor-made itinerary.

Where to stay in the Berg

The Drakensberg is usually visited one valley at a time. In the Northern Drakensberg, near Bergville, small lodges sit in gardens facing the escarpment. The Cathedral Peak valley is a base for hiking within the World Heritage landscape. In the Central Drakensberg, Champagne Valley and Cathkin Park hold the larger family resorts, one with its own golf course.

We match the valley to the trip: walking, a family holiday with activities on site, or a quiet few nights with a view.

NEARBY

The KwaZulu-Natal Midlands

Below the Drakensberg, the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands are farmland, country hotels and the Midlands Meander. They make an easy pairing with a Berg stay, or a stop on the way from Durban.

Getting there

Drakensberg and Midlands stays are reached by road from Durban’s King Shaka International Airport. There is no scheduled Spurwing tour in the Drakensberg; we can arrange a private road transfer, or plan the stay into a self-drive itinerary.
